Premiered by Gary Paulo and the Emory Wind Ensemble
Feathers of Burgundy & Gold
for solo alto saxophone and symphonic band
Emory University Schwartz Center for Performing Arts Emerson Hall on April 14th, 2022
Feathers of Burgundy & Gold features the vibrancy of the solo alto saxophone with the diverse range of characters in the symphonic band. As an exploration of color, I utilize both classical and experimental performance techniques from the soloist and band. Growling, air trills, subtones, and bent pitches decorate the saxophone’s voice as the symphonic band juxtaposes instrumental choirs in distinct harmonies.
As the title suggests, this piece illustrates the red and yellow tones of the mythical phoenix—a symbol of rebirth. The burgundy flames of the lamentable introduction lift the phoenix out of smoldering ashes as upbeat ostinato and antiphonal call and response sound between mallets, solo saxophone, and band. Unexpected transitions and bright flashes of sound detail glimpses of the phoenix’s gold feathers as it takes flight once again.
